What happens in a first session
This page is for people preparing for a first appointment. A first meeting is usually about what brings you, how you prefer to work, and whether you and the practitioner feel like a workable fit. Exact structure varies by profession and approach.
Typically
- Practical details: confidentiality, fees, cancellation, online or room set-up.
- Your goals and what has already helped or not helped.
- Questions both ways — you can ask about experience, waiting lists and next steps.
You do not have to decide everything in one sitting. If it does not feel right, it is ordinary to try someone else. Use Find a therapist for another introduction, or useful links for NHS and charity routes.
