Online or In-Person Therapy: How to Choose
Many UK practitioners now work online, in person or both. Neither is better for everyone. This guide sets out the practical points to weigh up.
Online and telephone sessions
- Wider choice: you can see a practitioner anywhere in the UK, which helps if you need a particular profession or specialism.
- No travel time, which suits busy schedules, caring responsibilities or mobility needs.
- You need a private, quiet space and a reliable connection.
In-person sessions
- Some people find it easier to open up in a dedicated room away from home.
- Some work needs to be in person, for example many Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Play Therapy and Arts Therapy sessions, and some Speech and Language Therapy assessments.
Questions to ask
- Which platform do you use, and how is it kept secure?
- What happens if the connection drops?
- Can we combine online and in-person sessions?
