Who can list
“Family therapist” and “family and systemic psychotherapist” aren’t titles protected by law in the UK, which is why we ask for a register entry. The AFSP says it generally takes four years to become a fully qualified family and systemic psychotherapist, and only then are people eligible for UKCP registration and to use the title “family and systemic psychotherapist”. On the join form, choose “UK Council for Psychotherapy” or “Association for Family and Systemic Psychotherapy” as your register.
On Find, family and systemic psychotherapists appear under the Counsellor / Psychotherapist profession. You can add “Family and systemic psychotherapy” as an approach and “Family and systemic” as your title or specialism, and say whether you work with families, couples or individuals.
If you have systemic training and are on another register on our join list for a different profession, you can join under that register. We only list people we can check on a public register.
Counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists and psychiatrists are just as welcome, and every profession is listed on the same terms. See our page for practitioners.
Which register we check
The UK Council for Psychotherapy register and find a therapist search, or the Association for Family and Systemic Psychotherapy’s find a therapist directory. We search by your name and the registration or membership number you give us and check they match a current entry. Our family therapy guide shows clients how to check.
What you get, free
- A public profile on Find a therapist, if you choose to appear, under the Counsellor / Psychotherapist profession on Find. It shows your register and number so people can check you themselves.
- Private introduction requests. People write to you through us and your email address is never shown.
- A members’ directory and peer space, messaging, and referrals between colleagues across professions.
- Links and resources, including a private practice start-here list.
- A free membership badge linking to your profile.
There are no paid tiers, featured spots, reviews or ratings, and we don’t take commission. Being listed doesn’t guarantee enquiries, clients or income. Therapist Circle is new and still growing, so there may be few listings from your profession yet.
How to list your practice
- Fill in the short join form with your name, profession, register and registration number. It takes about two minutes and you get member access straight away. The join form asks you to confirm that you have appropriate professional indemnity insurance or arrangements for the work you offer.
- We look you up on the public register by hand before your profile appears on Find. We don’t promise a specific timing.
- When your name and number match, your profile can go live. You can hide it or delete your account at any time. We re-check listed practitioners at least once a year, and we don’t run identity checks.
Other places to be found
You can be listed in more than one place, and being on Therapist Circle doesn’t affect any professional-body membership. These are the organisations we know of for this profession. We are independent of all of them, and details can change, so please check their own pages for who can be listed and any cost.
- AFSP: Find a therapist: The AFSP’s directory of its members who are family and systemic therapists, including those in private practice. Check their site for who can be listed.
- UKCP: Find a therapist: The AFSP points people to UKCP’s finder too, searching for terms such as family and systemic psychotherapist, family therapist or systemic psychotherapist.
Things to know
- The AFSP suggests clients check that a family therapist has a master’s qualification from an AFSP-accredited course and is on the UKCP register, and ask about DBS (or PVG in Scotland) checks if children or vulnerable adults are involved. We check the register entry only; we don’t check certificates or DBS status.
- Family therapy can be for a whole family, a couple or one person. Your profile can describe who you work with in your own words.
- We check that your name and registration number match a current entry on the public register. A check is only correct on the day it was made, and it isn’t an identity check or a guarantee.
